In 2015, the 24/7 Tobacco-Free Schools Act was passed, prohibiting the use of tobacco in or on any educational facility that offers an early childhood education program or where children in kindergarten through twelfth grade are educated.

The 24/7 Tobacco-Free Schools program helps Oklahoma schools implement and enforce policies that totally ban the use of tobacco in any form, by any persons, at any places, any times (including non-school hours) while on school grounds and during any school-sponsored functions held off campus.

Benefits of a 24/7 Tobacco-Free School include:

  • Provides positive role modeling by adult employees and visitors.
  • Reduces children’s observation of tobacco use and takes a firm stand against it.
  • Supports prevention messages delivered in classrooms by sending clear, consistent non-use messages.
  • Protects children from a dangerous drug. Tobacco use is not just a bad habit—it’s a powerful addiction.
  • Prepares students for the reality of smokefree workplaces.
  • Provides a safe environment for students, staff and visitors by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Protects schools from unnecessary risks and future liabilities.
  • Reduces the risk of fires due to smoking materials.
  • Improves the health and productivity of students and staff.

While all tobacco products are banned in the 24/7 Tobacco-Free Schools Act, electronic cigarettes and vapor products are exempt, as they remain unregulated. Schools looking to take the next step toward better student health can add voluntary policies that prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes and vapor products. Banning these products will provide positive role modeling by adult employees and visitors and further reduce the observation of smoking and tobacco use.
