WANT EVEN MORE HEALTHY IDEAS FROM SHAPE YOUR FUTURE?

Improve your health one step at a time this New Year

OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 27, 2014) – This New Year, make a resolution to eat better and move more with Shape Your Future, a statewide campaign sponsored by the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) and the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH). Simple changes like filling half your plate with fruits and veggies and moving 30 minutes each day can turn into lifelong healthy habits instead of quickly forgotten resolutions.

“Make one healthy choice at a time this New Year,” said Tracey Strader, executive director of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust. “Add veggies to every meal for a week and let each family member choose a favorite vegetable, or get up and dance around the room during commercial breaks. Small changes add up and before you know it, your entire family will be helping to set healthy new goals!”

Adults should aim to get 30 minutes of physical activity each day and children need 60 minutes daily in order to reduce risk for high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. It’s ok if you can’t get it all in at one time. Try being active a few times each day to get your 30 minutes. Three 10-minute walks around your workplace are a great way to take healthy steps this New Year.

Want to eat more fruits and vegetables, but not sure how? The Shape Your Future website has resources and healthy recipes for swapping less healthy foods for more nutritious options. Make dinner fun by combining low-fat cheese and milk with whole wheat pasta for a tasty mac and cheese or add some frozen pineapple and strawberries to fat-free ice cream for a healthier dessert.

Whether you’re a pro at making healthy choices or you feel you could make some changes, Shape Your Future will be with you each step of the way. Find recipes for eating better and physical activity ideas for moving more at ShapeYourFutureOK.com or connect on Facebook or Twitter at ShapeFutureOK.
